Recently tensions have been ramping up in Syria, especially after the accusations that the government are using chemical weapons on the “rebels”. Of course that means if in fact they are using those sorts of weapons (still to be determined at time of writing) then it means that they are using them on ordinary people as well.
In the last week the British government has decided not to intervene in Syria and the U.S. is still discussing whether or not it will get involved. I completely understand the seeming reluctance, for want of a better word. Considering how unpopular western “interventions” are in the region and the fact that the situation is more complicated that in Iraq for example. We invaded Iraq before it was clear whether or not they had weapons of mass destruction and after it turn out they didn’t what was already an unpopular war became even more unpopular. So ruling out or delaying another war seems to be the sensible thing to do right now, at least until confirmation either way on whether or not President Assad and his government used chemical weapons.
Another thing to consider is the fact that groups like Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda are getting involved on both sides of the fight so when people talk about arming or supporting the “rebels” it is important to know who we’re getting involved in. Although this sounds a lot like picking and choosing allies of convenience, it is important to think of the long term future of the country, the wider region and the rest of the world. There is no point ousting one dictator for him to be replaced by another or by an unpopular leader, like what is currently happening in Egypt.
All things considered I think that stepping back from this conflict is the more intelligent thing to do for now. Of course I’m not saying the conflict needs to end soon, for the sake of innocent people, but getting involved can only escalate the problem hence why I think we need to find an alternative way to end the war. There also needs to be a way to protect the civilians and that means the possibility getting involved at some level. I suppose the only thing to do is wait and see what the UN investigations bring back and see what decisions are made based on that.
These are few photographs from my dog walk from yesterday, I took these on my phone, so sorry for the lack of quality.
Seeing as I’ve been learning a coding language this year, I think it would be a decent idea to look for coding jobs over the summer. I’ve been learning C so it wouldn’t be anything major although learning a second language wouldn’t be a massive push to do to be honest.
I mean it’s something different to do over the summer plus it’s a bit more practice for it. Obviously as I’m doing Forensic Computing I probably won’t need it for uni but it should be good for keeping my skills up to scratch should I need them in the future.
Plus I actually find it quite interesting, even though I’m not going to be doing loads of it in the future just having the knowledge and the ability to do it competently enough can potentially be very useful. Though it can be quite tedious at times I like being meticulous about it and trying to get it all right before doing anything with, so I may need a bit of practice first. Of course I also have to pass my exams first as well on which note I should get back to the revision rather than mucking about on the internet.
On Sunday when I went food shopping I game across an offer in my local Tesco which I thought was a pretty good one. Obviously it’s to do with pizza, it was six pizza bases for £2 together with some cheap tomato puree and some cheese, that’s a fair amount of meals for a few weeks for less than a tenner. All I got to do is find some good toppings to go on it, so far I’ve done a chicken and mushroom one (above) and a chili and chicken one (I bought more chicken than I thought). They were both very tasty, I’m glad to say and neither took very long to cook either, which was good. If anyone has anyone good alternative pizza toppings suggestions that I can use in the future feel free to comment and leave any tips.
Having now read the first two book of The Hunger Games series, I have to say the hype surrounding these books is truly deserved. The only time I’ve felt this attached to a group of fictional characters in a book was when reading the Harry Potter books. I might accidentally put in some spoilers in here from now on, I’ll try to keep them to a minimum but read on at your own risk If you have yet read the books.
I have never really understood the link between violent video games and violent acts, considering how many people play video games and how many video games contain some sort of violence in them on a range of levels. Then you also have to consider how many people, who at some point in their lives, have played a video game of some sort and then compare that number to people who commit violent acts and the percentage who played games at some point through their lifetime.
Violence has almost always been there somewhere a long the line of human development and history, so where has this link coming from. Is it because gaming is a growing industry and therefor is garnering more media attention.
Not to mention that there are varying degrees of violence, ranging from things like swearing at someone, through verbal, emotional and physical abuse, all the way to murder and mass murder. So to say all the types of violent acts are directly attributable to violent video games is painting the industry with a very broad brush.
I’d like to point that although on the whole I don’t think that video games are not a standalone reason for violence, it has to be said they do make up part of a bigger picture. This picture being media as a whole, meaning things like film, TV and even newspapers (to a certain extent). There are plenty of examples in the media that glamorise violence, there are more than a few action, sci-fi and horror films out there that have quite gory and contain copious amounts of violence in them and those genres of films were about long before graphically violent video games became popular.
I believe more important factors in violent behaviour are things like family history in relation to violence, a persons biological make-up and the environment they grew up in. Also I believe mental illness and culture differences play bigger parts in violence or how a person might act in a situation than video games do or ever will do. I think that a persons psychology has a big effect on how they are affected by media and the world around them and how they interact socially and their surroundings.
So my opinion essentially comes down to this, video games are a piece of the jigsaw and not a very big one, in terms of the whole picture. There are too many factors when it comes to why humans act the way they do and video games are only one small part of it. In my opinion a deeper predisposition to violence and acting violently must be a bigger, more important part of a persons psychological make-up than what sort of things they take in from their surroundings.
So here we are at the start of another year with all the promises, challenges and whatever else lies hidden in front of us. That’s enough of pretending to be philosophical for now I hope that this year goes well for everyone.
I tend not to make resolutions for new years because there too many thing that can change to make sure that I will stick to them, plus I have a short attention span so there’s no way I’d be paying attention long enough to remember what my resolution was. Not to mention a resolution usually mean being productive at some point and that is a rare thing indeed.
2012 was an odd year, with lots of ups and downs. At one point I really didn’t know what I was going to do will my life, it was looking quite desperate. Fortunately I got in to university, just mind you and thankful for the opportunity to progress with my life and to better myself by learning new skills.
So far at uni everything has been going good so hopefully that continues, I have learned some new things, I’ve made great friends and things are going good which is a pleasant change and I hope it continues. My depression seems to be under control, I have more steady days than down days which is a positive sign.
So here’s to a good 2013 we shall see how it goes from here on out and take every day as it comes.
